Marquez’s promoter looking for Mayweather fight for him
By Francisco Gurrola, According to Mediotiempo.com, 41-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) is interested in a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) before he retires from the sport. Marquez wants the fight even though he hasn’t fought since May of 2014.
Zanfer Promotions president, Fernando Beltran, who Marquez has been working with for years now, is already looking for the next rival for Marquez to fight, which could be Mayweather or Kell Brook. “We are already looking for a rival, logically he still continues and will continue in rehabilitation, but if he feels at 100% we will have some offers lined up for him,” said Beltran.
This would not only be the comeback for the Mexican warrior Marquez, but they also are looking for a world title shot in the Welterweight division, a weight that Marquez has fought at in the past. “I reconfirm if @jmmarquez_1 recovers from his injury, we have a couple of opponents in mind between them @FloydMayweather ; @kellbrook1,” said Beltran through his official Twitter account.
Marquez will be 42 years old coming up in August and is one of the older fighters standing today. Last time Marquez was up in the ring was against Mike Alvarado, whom he beat by points. But a knee injury for Marquez that did not require surgery has made it hard for the Mexican warrior to come back to the ring since the Alvarado fight.
Marquez previously fought Mayweather in September 2009 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Floyd gave a boxing lesson to Marquez and won by a 12 round unanimous decision.
A rematch between Mayweather and Marquez will generate good income to both fighters. Marquez is still good for PPV numbers no doubt and I am sure Floyd wouldn’t mind squeezing the last of Marquez to make some good money. The fight would be interesting despite Marquez’s age. He seems very well maintained and as always very accurate. His speed is not and has never been a factor, but it would be an interesting match regardless.
The fight between Marquez and Kell Brook has been talked recently and seems to be the #1 option for Marquez at this point. It would be an interesting match, full of excitement because of what both of these boxers would bring to the table. Whichever opponent is chosen we hope to see Marquez go out as the warrior he is.
