Arum doubts Mayweather will ever face Khan

khan774By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it doesn’t look like Amir Khan will ever get a fight against superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr., at least according to Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum. He doesn’t think Mayweather will bother fighting the 28-year-old Khan due to the British fighter not being a big name in the U.S at this time.

Arum sees Khan as being a name in the UK, but in the United States, he’s nothing at this point as far as him being well-known among the casual boxing fans. This means that if Mayweather were to pick Khan out as his next opponent in September, he would be doing Khan a favor instead of the other way around.

If Mayweather doesn’t care anymore about making the most money possible for his fights, then Khan would be a decent opponent. Khan would take over in the Freddie Roach role and do a ton of yapping to sell the fight by giving interview after interview while bragging about how he’s going to beat Mayweather. But if Mayweather does care about making the most money possible for his final fight of his career in September, he would be making a huge blunder in taking on Khan due to the British fighter not being a household name in the U.S.

Mayweather would be smarter to fight Miguel Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez or Gennady Golovkin. Those guys would bring more money than a fight against Khan.

“He [Khan] will never fight Floyd Mayweather, never, never,” Arum said via the Dailystar.co.uk. “Amir Khan means a lot in England, a lot but not great. He is not as big as [Carl] Froch. I don’t think is as big as Kell Brook. He needs something. In the United States, Amir Khan means nothing and I mean nothing.”

I hate to rain on Arum’s parade but Kell Brook isn’t a big name in the United States. He’s pretty much in the same boat as Khan is in terms of being known to the American public. Fans in the U.S. have only see Brook’s recent fights against Jo Jo Dan and Shawn Porter. Brook did not impress against Porter, so I doubt casual fans remember him too much for that fight. It was pretty much all clinching from Brook, and was just awful to watch from start to finish. I had Porter winning the fight.

Arum says he’s potentially interested in matching Manny Pacquiao against Brook in the future. That obviously is going to need to happen next year due to Pacquiao having shoulder surgery this week.
