Khan to wear $50,000 boxing trunks for Alexander fight

khan111By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KOs) will be walking into the ring this Saturday night wearing expensive $50,000 boxing trunks for his clash with American Devon Alexander (26-2, 14 KOs) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The trunks have crocodile trim and 24 carat gold thread around the waist.
The reason for Khan wearing the expensive trunks is anyone’s guess. You could say perhaps that Khan is wearing the expensive trunks to put himself in the class of fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr.

While Khan doesn’t have the resume and track record to be put in with Mayweather in terms of talent and experience, he can always wear an expensive wardrobe like the American star. That in turn could help Khan gain attention from the judges in the fight, because with him wearing gold/crocodile trunks, it may be difficult for the judges to keep their eyes off of Khan.

In theory, this could help Khan if any of the rounds or close and the judges have to make a decision who to give the round to. If the judges have their eyes mostly on Khan due to his expensive trunks, then they could wind up giving him rounds that might otherwise be given to Alexander.

Of course, we don’t know yet what kind of boxing trunks Alexander will be wearing tonight. He can always outdo Khan by wearing his own expensive trunks for the fight. However, I don’t see that happening. Alexander is an old school boxer who likely won’t bother trying to impress boxing fans by wearing super expensive shorts for the fight.

The trunks could backfire for Khan if he goes out there and gets whipped by Alexander in the same way he got whipped by Danny Garcia and Bredis Prescott. The trunks will have been for nothing. It’ll give the Showtime cameras something to aim at while Khan is down on the canvas, but other than that, it won’t be a positive for him.

Khan is hoping a win over Alexander on Saturday night will catapult him into a big fight against Mayweather in 2015. That remains to be seen whether Khan can beat Alexander and whether a victory over him will give Khan the fight he’s been longing for all these years. Khan will need to look good in winning the fight.

That means he won’t be able to shove, hold, and put Alexander into head-locks and neck-bending moves like we saw Khan use against his last opponent Luis Collazo.

“Every fighter in the welterweight division wants that big fight against Floyd and as a hungry fighter you want to fight and beat the best,” Khan said via the BBC.co.uk. “Some styles cause problems for Floyd and some styles are made for him. You never want to leave boxing thinking what would have happened if I’d fought someone like Floyd.”

Khan figures that his style of fighting will work better against Mayweather than it would against the likes of Manny Pacquiao. We’ll likely find out in 2015 if Khan gets past Alexander and looks good in doing so.
