Khan says Kell Brook will have to wait, he wants Mayweather and Pacquiao

By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) says his primary goals are to get fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao in the near future. IBF 147 pound champion Kell Brook (33-0, 22 KOs), who badly wants to fight him, will have to wait until Khan gets finished fighting Mayweather and Pacquiao before he’ll agree to face him.

Khan defeated Devon Alexander last Saturday night by a 12 round decision, he believes that was a big enough win for him to get a fight against Pacquiao or Mayweather.

There are more than a few boxing fans who feel that Khan’s win over the made to order light hitting Alexander wasn’t nearly enough for Khan to get a fight against Mayweather or Pacquiao, but Khan and his promoters at Golden Boy think the win was more than enough for Khan to deserve getting fights against the big names.

“At the moment, I am focusing on the elite,” Khan said via Skysports.com. “The fight between me and Kell will always be there. I know it’s a fight the British public want but at the moment I want the big names like Mayweather and Pacquiao. Me and Kell have long careers ahead of us so no need to rush it and that fight will be there may be at the end of the year.”

Let’s look at it this way: If Khan doesn’t get a big money fight against Mayweather or Pacquiao in early 2015, then what is Khan going to do? Will Khan’s adviser Al Haymon or his promoters at Golden Boy find another light hitting guy for him to face or will Khan do the most logical thing and fight Brook.

Sure, if Khan can get one of the stars like Mayweather or Pacquiao to agree to fight him I early 2015 then it’s all good. But if Khan can’t get either of those fights, he’s going to look really bad if he chooses to fight another over-the-hill guy or another light hitting opponent.

“I think Floyd knows that as well and he will think it’ll be a tough fight for him and I will cause him problems. That could be why the fight hasn’t happened,” Khan said.

I think Mayweather hasn’t fought Khan yet because the fight isn’t big enough for him to waste time taking it. Khan is popular in the UK, but in the U.S he still doesn’t have a large fan base to where it would be worthwhile for Mayweather to take the fight with him.

It looks like Brook is going to be sitting around waiting until after Khan gets beaten by Mayweather and Pacquiao. Once those fights are done, Khan will really need the Brook fight because his stock will be way down. I’m not sure it would be worth it for Brook to take the fight by then. He’d be better off moving on and facing whichever big name fighters that he can get like Keith Thurman, Juan Manuel Marquez and Mayweather.
