Froch vs. Chavez Jr possible for March 28th

chavez01By Scott Gilfoid: It’s possible that IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch could get his dream fight against former WBC 160lb belt holder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in 2015. The express.co.uk is reporting that the fight is closed to being finalized for March 28th in a fight that will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The venue is the one Froch wants, because he says it’s been a dream of his to fight under the lights in Vegas. Interestingly enough, the Froch-Chavez Jr fight would likely make much more money if it were staged in the UK at Wembley Stadium.

I’m sure Chavez Jr wouldn’t mind fighting in the UK if it meant he was going to make that bank for fighting there. Chavez Jr has obviously sized Froch up, and he’s got to know by now that he can walk him down like he did against Andy Lee.

If Froch is forced to absorb 12 rounds of vicious body shots from Chavez Jr, we could see Froch curled up on the canvas clutching his midsection at some point in the fight unless his trainer has him running from Chavez Jr instead of standing his ground and fighting him toe-to-toe.

As easy as Froch is to hit, this could be a real punishing fight for him, because no one has ever beaten Chavez Jr by standing in one place and slugging with him. Froch’s limp jab won’t be much of a deterrent for Chavez Jr, because he’ll walk right through those weak punches to hammer Froch to the body.

You have to remember that Chavez Jr has sparred with Gennady Golovkin and take vicious punishment without going down. If Chavez Jr can take Golovkin’s shots, then naturally he’ll be able to walk through Froch’s to hammer him to the body and head.
It’s interesting that Froch has chosen Chavez Jr to fight instead of Gennady Golovkin, the best fighter in the middleweight division. Golovkin is the one that is getting all the praise in the United States right now.

Chavez Jr was getting a lot of love a couple of years ago after he whipped Andy Lee. After that though, Chavez Jr was soundly beaten by Sergio Martinez, and things haven’t been the same for Chavez Jr. In other words, Froch is like two years too late in taking on Chavez Jr, because the time to do that was in 2012 before he faced Sergio Martinez.

Now it’s a situation where Froch likely won’t get any credit even if he were able to beat Chavez Jr, which is still not a forgone conclusion. It’s basically a lose-lose situation for Froch. If he loses to Chavez Jr, then he’s going to look really bad because Chavez Jr hasn’t fought since March of 2014, so he’s been out of the ring for ages.

If Froch beats Chavez Jr then it’s no big deal because Chavez Jr was totally out-boxed by Sergio Martinez in 2012. Froch isn’t going to knock Chavez Jr out, and the chances are that Froch is going to take a lot of punishment unless he runs from him.

If Froch runs from Chavez Jr, then it’ll be similar to a loss in Froch’s case, but maybe even worse because fighters that run lose big time over the long run in terms of lost fans.
