PPV King Mayweather To Be Dethroned in 2015?

floyd6002By Carlos Rivera: Which PPV makes more $$: Mayweather/Khan or Canelo/Cotto? Mayweather/Khan or Canelo/Chavez Jr.?

Answer: Floyd and Showtime are in PPV trouble if Golden Boy gets either of these fights for next May.

Reports indicate that Canelo Alvarez was not kidding when he said he would challenge Floyd Mayweather, not in the ring, but in the box office and in Pay-Per-View. If Golden Boy promotions can successfully get Canelo scheduled against Cotto or Chavez Jr for the Cinco de Mayo weekend either fight would easily get more views than a Mayweather/Khan track race/hugfest.

The large Mexican contingent and general Latino contingent of boxing fans that have been paying to watch the B side fighters on these Mayweather cards would have little to no interest in seeing him fight Khan if Canelo also has a fight that weekend. Especially if that fight is against Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto or the underachieving crown prince Julio César Chávez Jr.

Due to the fact that Showtime is under contract with Mayweather they would have to air his fight. That means that Canelo’s May bout would be on rival HBO. Head to head battles between Canelo/Mayweather and Showtime/HBO would not be terrible for Mayweather and Showtime alike.

To be honest, at this time I don’t think there is a Mayweather match that would put up PPV numbers that would match or surpass what Canelo Alvarez can pull in during the Mexican holiday weekends. This battle for PPV buys and box office sales will be harder than any challenge Mayweather has faced in the ring.

Mayweather doesn’t plan on retiring until after September 2015. But come next May he may be dethroned as the King of Pay Per View and he will lose his stranglehold on the May and September fight dates he holds so dear. Good thing he still has that 0.
