floyd1(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Allan Fox: This past week WBA/WBC welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr briefly touched on the subject of Manny Pacquiao when he told reporters that there were no plans for him to fight him in the future.

Mayweather wanted to clear up with the media about the rumors that had been circulating around about there being negotiations going on between his management and Pacquiao’s management.

However, Mayweather didn’t rule out entirely a fight between him and the 35-year-old Pacquiao taking place in the future. The only thing that Mayweather said was that his focus is on his fight against Marcos Maidana and nothing else.

“I can’t say what the future holds,” Mayweather said. “But as for right now Arum and Pacquiao are trying to sell tickets for his fight against (Chris) Algieri. I’m just here for the Maidana fight. If the other fight [Pacquiao] presents itself, I can’t say what can happen in the future. All the stories that you’ve heard are totally false.”

While that may not sound promising from Mayweather in terms of a fight against Pacquiao, he does leave a door open by saying he’s doesn’t know what’s going to happen in the future. There’s always a possibility of a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, especially if Mayweather’s fight tonight against Maidana brings in poor pay-per-view numbers on Showtime.

There’s a belief by many in the boxing community that if Mayweather’s fight against Maidana generates an unusually low number of PPV buys tonight, Mayweather will feel obligated to then finally pull out his ace in the hole [the Pacquiao fight] and agree to fight Pacquiao. It would be the ultimate money maker at a time where Mayweather’s prospects of another big money fight would be slim.

The alternatives for Mayweather to get another big name opponent for a huge PPV event are slim at this point. There’s really only Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Pacquiao and possibly Gennady Golovkin in which Mayweather can bring in huge PPV sales numbers.

A Mayweather vs. Amir Khan is also a fight that could bring in over 1 million buys depending on how well Khan does in his December fight. Khan is a fighter that is good at building hype with his trash talking, and Mayweather would do well to face him.
