Keith Thurman: “I am NOT signed to Golden Boy Promotions I would consider signing to Top Rank”
By Don Esch: In a radio interview conducted by 78sportstv with WBA Interim Welter Weight Champion Keith “One Time” Thurman, the interview was focused on Thurman’s thoughts on Golden Boy, Top Rank, Al Haymon, Floyd Mayweather and the business of Boxing.
I must say after watching this young man speak (Keith Thurman) in multiple interviews Keith “One Time” Thurman is a real “class act” ;This young aspiring boxer is very articulate, funny, charismatic and an all around good person and dedicated athlete which we rarely see today. In my opinion Keith Thurman comes across as more than an athlete, Thurman comes across as a “role model” and a leader who speaks very well and very educated with absolutely no disrespect to any fighters, Promoters, Commentators, or Fans.
The air of confidence that Thurman has in his boxing ability compared to Adrien Broner & Floyd Mayweather that I see is totally different. In my opinion you have three African American champions who are all confident in their boxing ability but for some reason Broner & Mayweather’s confidence have a sense of complete arrogance where as Thurmans does not. At such a young age of 25 with many successes thus far I honestly have been waiting to catch an interview with Keith Thurman where a level of arrogance like Broner would arise but I haven’t as of yet. The interview itself was interesting to listen to.
78sportstv: “Richard Schafer is no longer with Golden Boy Promotions what’s your thoughts on that”?
Keith Thurman: “Um It’s just BUSINESS man you know, life is basic people have jobs and jobs come and go people move on change careers a lot of things happen”.
78sportstv: “Also there is some confusion I have heard rumors that you are signed with Al Haymon as an advisor but you are not “officially” signed with Golden Boy what can you tell us about that, are you signed with Golden Boy Promotions”?
Keith Thurman: “I DO NOT have a contract with Golden Boy Promotions!
78sportstv: “Ok so you DO NOT have a contract with Golden Boy Promotions. What role does Al Haymon play in your career is he ONLY an advisor or how does that work I want you to explain that to the fight fans”?
Keith Thurman: ”He’s a manager (Al Haymon) he manages my career advises others my only obligation is to Al and Al has an obligation to his fighters and you know it’s due to the contract”.
Keith Thurman:”I believe some fighters are signed to Golden Boy and Al but I don’t, no I don’t, I don’t FOLLOW I just watch how they perform”.
Keith Thurman went on to speak about Top Rank Promotions rival of Golden Boy Promotions.
78sportstv:” Since you’re NOT signed to any promotional company in particular would you ever consider signing with Top Rank Boxing”?
Keith Thurman: ”Personally I would probably consider it due to something my original trainer always told me, “It doesn’t matter who signs the check as long as the check doesn’t bounce and as long as they can provide you the fights’” there is a possibility that I can be bought one day you never know but I’m enjoying being a FREE AGENT at the moment.
78sportstv: Tim Bradley recently said he would be interested in fighting you how do you feel about fighting Tim Bradley”?
Keith Thurman:”GREAT MAN give me somebody”
78sportstv:”I already know you said you’re interested in fighting Manny Pacquiao”.
Keith Thurman goes on further in the interview about Boxing and Marcos Maidana pulling out his fight and Al Haymon steering Floyd Mayweather away from him (Keith Thurman).
