demarcoBy Dan Ambrose: Former WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco (31-3-1, 23 KOs) defeated 39-year-old journeyman Lanardo Tyner (31-11-2, 20 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision last night at the Casa Social de la Cervecería in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico.

The final judge’ scores were 98-92, 98-92 and 98-92, all for DeMarco. The fight took place in the light welterweight division.

The 5’10” DeMarco was dropped by the 5’7” Tyner with a hard left hook in the 1st round. DeMarco got back up and was able to make it out of the round despite taking a lot of punishing shots to the head. DeMarco continued to take heavy shots in the 2nd round from the much shorter Tyner.

DeMarco made it easy on Tyner by standing in close and trading with him on the inside. This is the same reason why Adrien Broner was able to destroy DeMarco in their fight in 2012. DeMarco stood in close and let Broner let his shots off. That was back when Broner was fighting at lightweight and had a lot more power for the weight class than he does now at 140.

DeMarco took over the fight in the 3rd round with his superior work rate and better inside fighting skills. Tyner lost some of the power on his shots as the rounds ticked off, and he didn’t throw as many shots. He was still catching DeMarco with some nice punches, but they lacked the major power needed for him to be able to knock him out or drop him.

At the end of the 5th, both fighters exchanged shots after the bell. DeMarco hugged Tyner after the round ended as if to apologize for the late shots.

Tyner did a lot of clowning in the 8th and 9th rounds in mugging to the crowd and putting his arms out in a showboating fashion. He was well behind on the scorecards by then, and he had to know that he was losing the fight.

All in all, it was a decent performance by DeMarco in beating Tyner. With that said, I don’t see DeMarco going anywhere in the 140 pound division. He’ll eventually get a title shot and a nice payday, but he’s not going to beat any of the current world champions at light welterweight.

If you put DeMarco in with Danny Garcia, Chris Algieri, Jessie Vargas for Lamont Peterson, he’s going to lose and lose badly. DeMarco needs to go back down to lightweight and try and make something happen in that weight class, because he’s out of his class at 140.
