The Gennady Golovkin Inquiries II

By Gerardo Granados: It’s been over one year since I got the chance to post an article related to the current WBA – IBO middleweight Champion of the World Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin aka “GGG”, on that occasion a friend of mine asked me a couple of questions about a fighter he didn’t knew much about. One of the questions was “why haven’t I heard of him before?”

Now, I feel obliged to ask the readers, how is it possible that a fighter who has successfully defended his title on an impressive winning streak of eleven knockouts or stoppages, has yet not received the sports media (not only boxing) attention that he deserves?

Many disappointing bouts have been arranged for some of the current boxing stars, to me it looks like one of those bouts should not be sanctioned as Championship bouts but instead as a ten rounder. Why? Because a “Challenger” to the title must have enough merits to dispute the title.

It was not a surprise that Manny Pacquiao decided to defend his WBO welterweight strap against little known but brave and determined light welter Chris Algieri (W20(8)-L0-D0), who managed to survive the relentless attack from Ruslan Provodnikov thru twelve rounds, to narrow a victory on the score cards after have received a beating in the process to win the WBO light welterweight belt. But, if a pressure fighter who doesn’t possess great mobility or speed much less impressive defense troubled Algieri that much, what makes you believe Algieri stands a chance against a veteran lion who edges him with speed, mobility, power, experience, quality of opposition faced and even on defense (hard to believe but it is true). Has the reader noticed that this will be only the second twelve rounder for light welter Algieri? Does Pacquiao deserve all the sports media attention for facing once again a tailor made opponent?

Danny Garcia will fight against Rod Salka (W19(3)-L3-D0) who isn’t ranked in the first 10 by any boxing organization. After Garcia struggled against Mauricio Herrera in his last fight, it is comprehensible to match him against someone that doesn’t represents much of a threat but being this bout a ten rounder how come it receives that much attention.

After losing to Marcos Maidana, Adrien Broner picked an unimpressive Carlos Molina for his comeback fight, it was understandable that he picked someone who helped him build his confidence back, but the rumor mill has Broner fighting against little known Emmanuel Taylor (W18(12)-L2-D0) next. Does this fight deserve the attention of the sports media over GGG?
Nonito Donaire fought against Simpiwe Vetyeka and won the WBA Super World featherweight belt in his first division bout, but why is he ranked as number one on that division by BOXREC and third on ESPN rankings? Was it enough to defeat Vetyeka?

A year later, Golovkin has five successful title defenses all by the way of knockout, he has defeated good opposition and also has called out and has been avoided by the top fighters who won’t risk losing against him. Gennady has a fan friendly fighting style, is willing to please the crowd and take risks, also has proved to have a good chin and not only great power; he is articulated when interviewed and understands English pretty well, owns a great smile that goes along with his big eyes that reminds me of someone who is about to do something crazy. GGG has a current streak of seventeen knockouts!

Then why is it that Golovkin has not reached boxing stardom yet, even if he owns an impeccable record of 30 wins no losses with 27 knockouts? Maybe it is all about to have the right promoter behind to finally be able to shine or it could be because boxing fans are getting blinded by the constant hype of other called boxing stars.

I strongly believe that Golovkin has the tools to become a huge draw for the next couple of years, but I wonder if he will be avoided or will he be able to finally land a big fight. But what about the reader, do you think Gennady GGG Golovkin should get more attention from the sports media?
