(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Raymundo Roman: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs) will be facing the Cuban Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12 KOs) this Saturday night in a cathweight fight of 155 lb. in the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This is a fight that many boxing fans are waiting for because is a 50/50 fight that could go either way and this is good for boxing because lately at the elite level the fighters are match carefully not risking future paydays or fights, on this one you have to give Canelo a lot of credit because he could have taken a soft fight and wait for Cotto or a big fight with low risk and high reward, but he choose to gave the fans what they want.
For the past year Lara chased Canelo for social network and interviews challenging him and looking for a fight for the supremacy in the junior middleweight division, and all the fans were saying that Canelo was afraid of Lara. But was until Lara stepped in the post-fight press conference of the Angulo vs Alvarez fight and asked for the fight in front of the media that Canelo accepted his challenge for honor.
Many boxing experts are divided on who is going to win this fight because is a fight between two fighters with very good skills but with different ability’s, Lara has better amateur experience defense, mobility, foot work and speed, for Canelo goes the punching power, combination punching, ring IQ, timing and has developed good defense with each fight.
One main thing Canelo need in order to win this fight and one that he is been criticized is his foot work, he would need to cut off the ring against Lara because he probably is going to spend much of the fight with a lot of movement and jabbing trying to keep Canelo at the distance, Canelo must apply smart pressure and try to trap Lara on the ropes so he can throw combinations of 4-5 punches and attack the body of Lara to try slow his movement, like Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. say, attack the body and the head will fall alone .
Lara will need to use movement for most of the fight so he will need to be in great shape and work on his conditioning for this fight, because if he try to brawl with Canelo in the same manner that he did in the fight with Alfredo Angulo he could have a lot of problems and could risk getting hit with hard punches. The speed, movement, foot work and the jab would be the key in this fight for Lara and try to outbox Canelo, maybe Lara will use the blue print that create Mayweather when they fought. One thing that Lara have that could play a big part in this fight is the hunger and the desire to win this fight that makes Lara very dangerous.
This is a fight that is really intriguing because is an even match that could go either way, we will see a great fight that you could not miss if you are a true boxing fan, all the boxing community are waiting this fight for much time now, and with the fight just days away, we will see if the power, hand speed, combination punching and desire to become the next PPV star in boxing will be sufficient for Canelo Alvarez to win this Saturday or the skills, foot work, movement, amateur experience and the hunger to win this fight favors Lara, may the best win.
