Entertainment Fans vs. Real Boxing Fans: Which one is becoming a deadly cancer to the sport of Boxing?

By Don Ech: The World Cup has come and gone Brazil has failed this time around but at least they were able to host such an awesome event. My personal group of friends and family mostly consist of European / South American decent so this was their “Super Bowl” over these past few months. As I sat back and watched these guys from different walks of life and different age groups come together to watch, and cheer, and debate but yet in their hearts they all felt that they were all “true fans” of soccer aka “futbol” through and through.

In my eyes though I honestly didn’t care “who was who” or “what was what” I just wanted to see an exciting game since the World Cup is such a big deal just bring the guys out and let’s get this game on. These friends of mine knew about the business side of professional soccer as well as professional players and rules and inside info like they all worked for FIFA and argued what players were overrated and what teams were mismatches it was truly amazing to witness and I didn’t even try to voice my opinion or argue anything with these guys.

All of this led me to see for the first time that the Sport of Boxing in my opinion has the same fans “Entertainment Fans and True Boxing Fans” which some may think is the same but they are not, they share some of the same likes and dislikes but still they are totally different. The True Boxing Fan cares about the sport of boxing as a whole, the sport, entertainment, and business sides are equally important for the longevity of the sport in the eyes of the “True Boxing Fan”.

The TBF (True boxing fan) group cares about fairness and cheating in the sport as well as sanctioning bodies and Promotional companies duties and Compubox numbers. TBF people understand about weight at fight night which is crucial for a “fair” fight and who is too “green” or is “ready” for the challenge at hand. There are a host of other things that a (TBF) can see and care about in the sport of boxing that others do not like “Entertainment Fans” and now I refuse to argue when I realize that the other person is in fact an “entertainment fan”.

The “entertainment fan” is very easy to spot because they all typically say the same thing which is “I don’t care about ANYTHING ELSE I just want to see a fight”. In my opinion these guys are the cancer of the sport of boxing because that way of thinking is unsafe, ignorant, and disrespectful to the history of “The Sweet Science” of boxing. First of all if the boxing council took the same idea and approach of the “I Don’t care let’s just put on an exciting fight” attitude that would totally make the ring unsafe for each and every fighter including your favorite boxer because guys would use every drug known to man to win.

The trainers would manipulate every glove every time to win and they would most likely rob the fighters of time and money whenever they felt the need. Promoters would find the cheapest places to put on events ignoring safety concerns just for a dollar and swaying judges for gift decisions. How Ignorant of an “Entertainment Fan” to say (I don’t care I just want to see an exciting fight) when boxers train for vigorous hours on end and some actually have second and third jobs to support themselves and families because they themselves don’t have Mayweather or Pacquiao attached to their name.

Now “Entertainment Fans” are disrespecting the sport of boxing by shifting the focus from true boxing skill to who can put on the best show as the deciding factor of who wins and who loses a boxing match. The History of boxing goes very far back and it was about true skills inside that squared circle bobbing and weaving, lateral movement, power, speed which all together automatically produced a great show.

In my opinion the glory days of boxing will soon be over and the “Cancer” is already spreading because three of the biggest PPV stars Mayweather, Pacquuao, and Cotto all failed to make one million buys in their last PPV numbes which is an indication how many people are still paying to watch. Mayweather vs. Maidana 1 PPV was never “officially” released but if you simply Google Pay-Per View Wikipedia they have it at 850,000 / Pacquiao vs. Bradley II 800,000 / Cotto vs. Martinez 350,000. Entertainment Fan you sir and or madam are a Cancer !
