Mayweather takes issue with padding in Maidana’s gloves

floyd999211By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. took issue with the passing of Marcos Maidana’s gloved during an inspection of his gloves today. After inspecting Maidana’s gloves, Mayweather said that he didn’t feel any padding around the knuckles of the gloves, and he insisted that the gloves be changed to the same gloves that he wears. According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, the Mayweather-Maidana fight has “zero chance” of being called off. The fight will take place once they agree on the gloves.

“He’s going to where the same s*** as me. We gonna be on an even playing field,” Mayweather said in talking about Maidana’s gloves.

Leonard Ellberbe, the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, said “There’s no padding in the knuckles.”

The question here is whether Mayweather is using gamesmanship on Maidana by getting them riled up over the gloves at the last second to possibly throw Maidana off his game. It’ll be interesting if Maidana winds up wearing extra-sized gloves because of this that will take the power out of his shots.

Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia said that the gloves that they’re using is the same type of gloves that they always wear.

Mayweather was pretty upset about the gloves, and he walked out of the meeting saying that the gloves will definitely need to be changed before the fight can take place.

With Maidana set to make $1.5 million for the fight in addition to a percentage of the pay-per-view buys, he’s not going to blow it by failing to make the needed changes that he has to with the gloves. That’s too much money, and he obviously knows that he wouldn’t get a second chance at a Mayweather fight if the bout fails to go through over a glove issue.

If this is indeed the same type of gloves that Maidana has been wearing for all of his fights, you have to wonder why no one else took issue with Maidana’s gloves in the past. After all, Maidana has fought guys like Adrien Broner, Devon Alexander and Amir Khan, and none of them made a fuss about the gloves that he used in those fights.
