Mayweather will probably stop Maidana, says Roger M.

maidana6768By Allan Fox: Roger Mayweather, the uncle for Floyd Mayweather Jr. (45-0, 26 KO’s), sees there being a lot of interest from boxing fans in Mayweather’s next title defense against WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31 KO’s) on May 3rd. Roger doesn’t think that Maidana has the skills to be competitive with Mayweather Jr., but he still sees it as a fight that will interest boxing fans a great deal due to Maidana’s aggressive fighting style and because of his big win over Adrien Broner.

Maidana is known for having a pretty good chin, and the ability to get up from knockdowns. However, Roger still thinks that Mayweather Jr. will find a way to stop him on May 3rd somehow. If that’s going to be the case, then Mayweather Jr. will likely need to go to the body of Maidana because he seems to be more vulnerable to those kinds of shots than he does with head shots. Maidana has never been knocked out before during his 10-year pro career, so it’s going to take something special from Mayweather to be able to score a knockout against him.

“I think that’s what the people wanted to see,” Roger said to Hustleboss. “People wanted to see what he could do with Maidana so I guess we’re going to find out. [Floyd Jr. has] Too much skill for him. I think he’ll probably stop him. It probably aint going to be early but I believe he’ll stop him though.”

Mayweather hasn’t knocked out an opponent since his 4th round TKO victory over Victor Ortiz in 2011, and that was a controversial stoppage due to Mayweather hitting Ortiz while his hands were down by his sides when he was in the process of hugging Mayweather for the 2nd time in the round. Mayweather probably would have been able to stop Ortiz at some point had the fight continued on, but we’ll never know. Ortiz appeared to be going through a mental self destruct in the 4th round even before his head-butt of Mayweather. If Ortiz had continued to fight like this, Mayweather would have stopped him in the 5th or 6th rounds with something that he didn’t see coming.

Maidana can really dish it out, and if he’s able to stay in the fight until the later rounds, Mayweather could find himself taking a lot of punishment. The only opponent that Maidana has fought who didn’t take a lot of punishment against him was Devon Alexander, and the only reason he didn’t get hit a lot was because he was clinching over 10 times per round and the referee was letting him do that. Alexander timed it to where he would throw a shot and immediately dive forward to clinch Maidana before he could throw anything back. Mayweather won’t fight like that, because he’s not the type to try and win by spoiling for 12 rounds. He’s going to want to stay on the outside and beat Maidana by pot-shotting him with hard shots, and that means he’s going to have to take a lot of hard punches.
