Rios to Gamboa: You can come out of your hole

By Chris Williams: Despite the talk of Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-0, 16 KO’s) as a possible opponent for Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) next, Brandon Rios is still taking shots at Gamboa on his social media date. Rios and Gamboa went back and forth trading trash-talking tweets last week, but it looks like Rios is still interested in taking shots at the Cuban.

Rios hadn’t been talking about Gamboa until recently when Gambao and his promoter started showing a lot of interested in facing Mikey. Rather than let those two talk about a fight, Rios put himself into the equation in saying he’d like to fight Gamboa next. For his part, Gamboa doesn’t see any point in fighting Rios right now after his back to back losses to Mike Alvarado and Manny Pacquiao.

Gamboa and Rios were scheduled to fight two years ago, but Gamboa walked away from the fight due to the money not being good enough. Rios took that as a sign that Gamboa was afraid of him. Rios went on to win a controversial 12 round decision over Richard Arbil. Rios chose not to give Abril a rematch despite the boxing public seeing Rios as having lost to Abril by a lopsided decision.

If Gamboa can beat Mikey this year then a Rios vs. Gamboa fight would be an interesting one. The only problem that might keep the Rios-Gamboa fight from taking place is the weight. Rios is now fighting at light welterweight, and there are major questions whether he can make that weight class. He barely made 147 for his fight against Pacquiao.

Gamboa would need to move up to 140 to fight Rios, and the chances are high that Rios would rehydrate up to 160+ the night of the fight. But the major thing that might kill interest in a Gamboa vs. Rios fight is the lack of interest in a match-up like that. Rios is heading towards journeyman status if he keeps losing the way he’s been doing, and his loss to Pacquiao really hurt his status in the boxing world. Rios needs to get a solid win under his belt before he starts trying to call out a fighter like Gamboa.
