Fury sees Chisora fight as a World heavyweight title eliminator

fury2222By Scott Gilfoid: British heavyweight Tyson Fury (21-0, 15 KO’s) thinks that his fight with EBU heavyweight champion Dereck Chisora (19-4, 13 KO’s) this Summer will be a heavyweight World title eliminator bout to lock the winner into becoming a mandatory challenger for one of the champions. Fury isn’t saying which champion that this so-called eliminator will be for, but I think the only one possible is Wladimir Klitschko for his WBO strap.

Chisora is ranked #2 by the WBO, whereas Fury is ranked #7 by the same organization. Why the World Boxing Organization would like Chisora fight someone ranked as low as Fury in the WBO title eliminator bout is hard to say. I mean, Andy Ruiz, #3 WBO, and Deontay Wilder, #4 WBO, would have to be completely skipped over by the WBO if the Chisora-Fury fight were to be a WBO eliminator bout, and that’s not right.

It should be either Chisora-Ruiz or Chisora-Wilder for the WBO heavyweight eliminator, and I can’t see Chisora winning either of those fights. Fury needs to actually beat someone so that he can get ranked in the top 5, and he needs to stay active. Wasting almost an entire year of his career in 2013 by fiddling around with David Haye hurt Fury in a big way.

“I’m really looking forward to facing Chisora again and it should be a really good fight for me,” Fury said to Sky Sports. “There’s a great reward for the winner – a chance to fight for the heavyweight championship of the world…he’s still who he is and I will still beat him.”

Fury has a fight scheduled next month on February 15th against 39-year-old Gonzalo Omar Basile(61-8, 28 KO’s) at the Copper Box Arena in London, UK. This is a mismatch. Basile has been blown out early in knockout losses to Luis Oscar Juarez and Artur Szpilka recently. Basile is just another Martin Rogan-like opponent for Fury to pick up and easy win against a make him look better than he actually is.

Chisora has a mismatch too on February 15th on the same card. He’s fighting 34-year-old Kevin Johnson, who appears to be 4 years past his prime and who has lost 2 out of his last 3 fights.

If Chisora is going to be fighting in a WBO eliminator bout, then the WBO should at least make sure that he’s doing it against either the #3 or #4 contender in the division. Skipping past Ruiz and Deontay to give Fury the fight is just so sad.
