By Gerardo Granados: I hope you have enjoyed a year full of great fights, this was a busy year and it looks like the next year 2014 will be packed with more interesting fights.

I´ll ask fight fans to raise their drinks and have a toast to all those brave lions, the ones who fought on the main events but also the ones whom all around the world gave boxing fans a good fight to watch. Ladies and Gentlemen without any further last words let´s award the very best of 2013.

A lackluster award but a necessary one, the “Robbery of the year award” goes to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Brian Vera. Even that Vera was outweighed by a few pounds he controlled the pace of the fight, also out punched and clearly out landed his opponent round after round but lost the fight on the score cards instead of have won an evident unanimous decision, it was simply unbelievable.

“Upset of the year” goes to Marcos Maidana vs. Adrien Broner. It was no secret that Maidana had struggled against skilled boxers in the past but the hunger and determination of the Argentinean lion proved to be too much to handle for the over confident Broner who failed to solve the problem that Chino represented to him.

“Trainer of the year” goes to Robert Garcia.

“Heart of a lion” goes to Brandon Rios for his relentless will to win.

“Knockout of the year” goes to Johnny Gonzalez vs. Abner Mares. Floored him, hurt him and just finished him in one round in a shocking upset.

“Fight of the year” goes to Ruslan Provodnikov vs. Tim Bradley. The Desert Storm barely survived Provodnikov and won a close fight on the score cards and even that the Siberian Rocky lost the bout he won many fans that night.

It was not easy to decide between this fight and the Ruslan Provodnikov vs. Mike Alvarado and the Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado bouts but after reviewing the fights the decision was made.

“Fighter of the year” goes to Floyd Mayweather Jr. After a dominating performance against the mandatory WBC welterweight challenger Robert “Ghost” Guerrero, Money took the challenge and put up a boxing clinic to defeat a young dangerous Saul Alvarez to pick both light middleweight WBC & WBA championship belts.

Congratulations to the 2013 Boxingnews24 Awards winners and also wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the readers.
