Sanchez believes Golovkin can get Mayweather the big payday he wants

golovkin451By Chris Williams: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO’s), believes that Gennady is the only fighter in boxing that can give Floyd Mayweather Jr. the big payday that he’s looking for. Sanchez sees a fight between Golovkin and Mayweather Jr. at 154 lbs. bringing Mayweather similar big money payday that he received in his last fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last month. This is a fight that makes a lot of sense for both fighters.

Sanchez told Hustleboss “I think Golovkin is really the only name out there that is going to get him [Mayweather] the kind of payday that he had in his last bout with Canelo. There’s nobody on the horizon that’s going to get him a $40-$50 million dollar payday. And if Golovkin is the guy, then we’re willing to down down to 154.”

Sanchez could be right. Boxing fans will be a lot more excited at seeing Mayweather fighting a guy that’s considered to be invincible like Golovkin, with an unbeaten record, and with the real potential of beating Mayweather. You can’t say that with Mayweather’s potential opponents Amir Khan, Devon Alexander and Danny Garcia. All of those guys would be seen as opponents with little to no chance at beating Mayweather. The fights would bring in decent numbers, but nothing even close to the numbers that the Mayweather-Canelo fight did on PPV.

The reason that the Mayweather-Canelo fight did so well was that fans thought that Canelo had a chance to beat Mayweather, and so they purchased the fight in high numbers thinking they’d see Mayweather potentially taste defeat for the first time. It didn’t turn out that way obviously due to Canelo’s inexperience and Mayweather’s huge talent advantage, but the fight definitely excited the fans. If Mayweather wants to keep that excitement then he’s going to need to fight someone like Golovkin.

It’s a doable fight because there’s not a lot of weight that separates them. Golovkin is a fighter that rehydrates close to 170 lbs. when he fights, which is about the same as Canelo. If Golovkin can get down to 154 for the fight to happen, then there’s no reason why Mayweather shouldn’t fight him if he wants to get a huge payday like the one he received in the Canelo fight.

Golovkin wants to get back in the ring in February to fight, but if he can change his plans on fighting at that time and instead wait until May for a Mayweather fight, it could be a possibility.
