DeGale: Froch was exposed by Groves; he should retire

degale74By Scott Gilfoid: James DeGale thinks IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch was pretty well exposed by George Groves last Saturday night in their clash in Manchester, UK, and DeGale thinks that Froch should look to retire from the sport after he takes on whichever big money fights he wants to get out of the way before he hangs up his gloves. DeGale doesn’t see the point in Froch giving Groves a rematch, because he doesn’t need to and there bigger fights out there for him.

DeGale said to IFL TV “He [Froch] was getting beaten well. He was getting exposed. Froch was poor, he was poor. I expected so much more from from him. Groves looked like the 2-world champion, not him. He needs to give it up, because it’s not his time no more. Froch was eating right hands, getting caught with solid right hands. He looked fragile and weak. Groves looked faster than Froch. Even when they were exchanging punches, he was too fast for Froch.”

DeGale went onto say that he would easily beat Froch if given the chance to fight him. It doesn’t look like Froch is going to give DeGale a chance to find out, and Froch has already said he’s moving on from the Groves fight. Froch wants to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andre Ward. He didn’t mention Lucian Bute or Mikkel Kessler, but I’d be willing to guess that Froch would jump at the chance to fight either of them again if he can’t get a fight agaisnt Chavez Jr. or Ward.

I don’t see why Froch couldn’t get a rematch against Ward, but the thing that would mess that fight up is if Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn insists that the fight must take place in the UK for it to happen. Ward hasn’t been excited about fighting Froch in the UK ever since he saw Andre Dirrell dominate Froch in Nottingham in 2009 and come out of the fight the loser. Ward thought Dirrell won that fight, and he doesn’t become another Dirrell where he comes to the UK, gives Froch a whipping in front of his own British fans, and then sees Froch’s hand raised at the end of the fight instead of his own.

I agree with DeGale. Froch did look weaker and a lot slower than Groves, and , yes, Froch looked shot as a fighter. He definitely should cash out against one of the top fighters at 168 or preferably against a top fighter from the light heavyweight division like Bernard Hopkins.
