Groves angers Froch

froch7654By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten George Groves (19-0, 15 KO’s) really had IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (31-2, 22 KO’s) steaming mad in their one-on-one interview with Sky Sports on Wednesday to talk about their November 23rd fight at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, UK. A cool and calm Groves had Froch so upset that his voice was starting to crack and he admitted that he couldn’t even look at Groves.

It was pretty sad to see the older 36-year-old Froch barely able to keep his emotions in check in a harmless discussion with a fighter 11 years his junior in 25-year-old Groves. In that meeting Groves clearly got the better of Froch.

Froch said to Sky Sports “He should show respect. I deserve respect for what I’ve done. He can’t mention my name in a positive light at all and he constantly puts down my performances.”

Groves said “I think he’s confusing disrespect with fear and I don’t fear him. There’s nothing to fear…I am supremely confident I will do the business. You sound and look worried.”

Groves is right. Froch did sound and look worried in a way that I’ve never seen him look before. I mean, I thought Froch looked worried as heck before his fights against Andre Dirrell and Andre Ward, but this is a whole new level against Groves. Froch looks incredibly worried and totally wound up. Groves is coolness and ability to come up with witty comeback remarks to Froch seems to have really gotten under the 36-year-old fighter’s skin and I don’t think he can handle it.

It looks bad for Froch in this fight because Groves does everything that Froch can do but much better. Groves is faster than Froch, he moves better, he better power, better defensive skills and he appears to have a much superior boxing brain. I think Froch is about to get schooled by Groves on November 23rd and the entire UK is going to see it happen. Froch wants to be be treated with respect by Groves for his past accomplishments, but Groves is about to show how little meaning those accomplishments are by beating Froch badly in this fight.

It seems almost wretched to hear Froch badgering Groves for not showing him the proper respect. Why is Froch even taking that angle for this fight. It makes Froch seem insecure as heck for him to be trying to get Groves to start showing him respect. That shouldn’t even enter into it. Groves is free to think of Froch as he wishes, and if he sees Froch as an overrated and highly beatable fighter, then he should be free to point it out as often as he wishes.

At 36, Froch should be experienced enough with his opposition to where he doesn’t care what they think, and it shouldn’t bother him anymore that he’s facing someone that feels he can whip him. But in looking at how nervous Froch was in the meeting with Groves, I think there’s some real fear there on Froch’s part about this fight. You don’t get wound up the way that Froch did with Groves if you don’t have some worry and uncertainty about how he’ll do against him.
