003 Mayweather vs Canelo IMG_9198(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Stevie Ocallaghan: Last night in Las Vegas we witnessed pretty much what we all knew would happen. Floyd Mayweather scoring a pretty much one sided win against the unbeaten young Mexican Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Did anybody really expect anything else? Alvarez is a good fighter, but that’s it. He will have a good career, he already has but he was never going to beat Floyd. Hes just not good enough.

Alvarez said he just couldn’t figure Floyd out. Its not about figuring out its just Floyd was and is better. The kind of fighter for Mayweather to make it a better fight is actually someone like Amir Khan or Devon Alexander. Even a Pauli Malignaggi would give Floyd a better fight than Alvarez. The three named fighters have skills and speed.

People will scoff at Khans name being mentioned, but he is one of the fastest punchers on the planet. Floyd doesn’t knock anybody out, he beats them with skills. Khan has skills and if both agree at 147, that fight would be far more interesting than last nights encounter.

When Khan fought Garcia, for the first two and a half rounds, Khan made Garcia look amateurish. Okay, Garcia caught Khan with a sweet punch but Khan was still standing when stopped over a round later. Khan doesn’t need to worry about Floyd’s power and that for me is the main telling factor.

Floyd wants to fight in Britain and why not face Khan. Amir Khan doesn’t do boring fights unlike Floyd.
A lot of people cant seem to figure Floyd’s defense out but he is more open on his right side. A quick puncher can take advantage of that.

Saul Alvarez, Robert Guererro, Miguel Cotto and Victor Ortiz, all good fighters but not noted for speed. Speed kills in boxing. That’s why Floyd reigns supreme.

If you look at Floyd record, he hasn’t really fought a speedy fighter. Mosley and Oscar where in the twilight of their career, but that’s it. He picks slower fighters and that’s why a quick guy will give Floyd problems.
Adrien Broner is supposed to be the next big thing. He moved up in weight to fight what many said was his easiest chance to gain another world title when he fought Malignaggi. Pauli is not a big puncher but he is quick and look how close that fight was. Amir Khan destroyed Malignaggi.

A Floyd Mayweather v Amir Khan fight in Britain would be possibly fight of the year .Two quick guys with great skills. It would be a classic.

A few months ago i thought Andre Ward was the best boxer pound for pound. It has to be Floyd but he has chosen his opponents carefully. Oscar showed that a good fighter with speed could beat Mayweather and realistically there is no faster puncher than Amir Khan. If Khan gets past Devon Alexander and that’s a great fight also, his next fight should be Floyd. With Khan being ten years his junior, old father time might just play a wee part.
