chavez565By Gerardo Granados: Throughout the vast Mexican boxing history there had been a lot of mean brave fighters, and also many talented prizefighters who had been inducted in to the boxing hall of fame and others who are strong candidates. But, most of them belong to the lower weight division and to see talented Mexican boxers above the welter division is not common.

From straw weight Ricardo Finito Lopez up to welterweights Pipino Cuevas and Carlos Palomino we can find Mexican fighters who had been able to not only win a major organization championship but also have been followed because of his fan friendly boxing style.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was the first Mexican fighter to win a major organization belt at the middleweight division, the WBC championship. And now it seems like he will finally move up to the super middleweight division that is filled with talented contenders and organization champions who will gladly engage against a fighter that could bring them a good pay day. But, will Chavez Jr. finally get to discipline himself and adapt his body to make weight after his long layoff?

At an interview on UNIVISION DEPORTES Julio Cesar stated that he wanted to become the first Mexican to win the 168 and 175 championships. But that could not be an easy task for the son of the legend even if there are four major organization belts for grabs. First of all he is still struggling to make weight, and the rumors say that his next fight will be above the 168 pounds. How could this happen?

After the long suspension someone should had advice Chavez Jr. to hire a personal physical trainer and nutritionist to avoid weight problems. Next issue is that he won’t be able to become the first Mexican fighter to win a 175 belt because there is a Julio Cesar Gonzalez who already has won the WBO light heavyweight belt (by UD12 vs. Dariusz Michalczewski back in 2003); Chavez Jr. might not become the very first but for sure he could become the first one that boxing fans could remember with ease.

A friend of mine asked me if Julio Cesar will achieve it, and I responded to him that first he has to defeat Brian Vera next Saturday night, and then take on a super middleweight contender before we measure his chances. But, what does the reader think? Do you believe Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be able to win a major organization belt at the 168 and 175 pounds limit?
