What’s next for Golovkin?

golovkin53By Jose Muradas: WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) is the exception in today’s fight game. He wants to fight and will fight anyone from 154-168 lbs. He wants to remain active by fighting up to five times before the end of 2013. He announced himself to the 160lb division by disposing of Matthew Macklin (29-4,19KO’s) in three rounds.

Golovkin landed a blistering left hook to the body that HBO’s Lou Dibella said he heard from ringside. Di Bella said, ” I heard something crack”. It’s no wonder why Golovkin has not received any offers from the rest of the 160 pound division. He has his sights set on Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11KO’s)who came off a brilliant showing against Sergio Martinez (51-2-2, 28KO’s) back in April. However, there seems to be no interest from Murray’s camp to make that fight a reality.

Golovkin is looking to step back in the ring in November. He may have to wait for Murray, but Brooklyn native Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18 KO’s)says he wants a shot at Golovkin. Stevens, a hard puncher himself who’s devastating left hook flattened veteran Saul Roman (37-9, 31 KO’s) in round one of their Aug 3rd fight, says he feels he can beat Golovkin. Stevens, who loaded up most of the fight looking for a knockout, hurt Roman early in the fight and just kept looking for the big shot until he got it. He will not get the opportunity to hunt for a quick KO against Golovkin. GGG, brings a stronger skill set to the ring than that of Roman.

The Kazakh fighter had a brilliant amateur career. He won the silver medal in the 2004 Olympics, and is an accomplished boxer. He is also a puncher blazing a trail of vicious KO’s since his pro debut. He has been compared to the legendary Roberto Duran for his heavy punch and his ability to pound the body. Golovkin’s future is a bright one and he could be the heir apparent to boxing’s throne once Mayweather retires. However, unlike Mayweather, Golovkin wants to blast through the middleweight division and leave no doubt about fighting the best.

Golovkin is hungry and he wants to be a great fighter. He is the buzz in the boxing world, a throwback fighter who is willing to take on any and all opposition. The only problem is that no one with a top ranking is knocking down the door to fight him. If Golovkin can’t get Martin Murray, he can certainly trade bombs with Stevens and that in itself can make an exciting bout.
