rigondeaux111`By Paul-Jonas Sivertsen: Fighter of the year (FOTY) is a distinguished title who is awarded to the boxer`s who has had most success against the highest quality of opponents. The two main foty awards are the self proclaimed bible of boxing, The Ring Magazine and The Boxing Writer`s association of America.

The front contestants are as of now, Lucas Matthysse and Guillermo Rigondeaux. Matthysse thanks to his stunning 3rd round TKO of IBF Light Welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, and before that Matthysse had a 1st round KO of capable Mike Dallas Jr. The former 2 time Olympic gold medalist and Cuban dissident Guillermo Rigondeaux put on a fantastic performance against then top 5 pound-for-pounder Nonito Donaire to unify the WBA, WBO & Ring magazine super bantamweight titles.

I believe the fighter of the year 2013 will be pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. He dominated then #10 pound for pound Robert Guerrero winning every round last May. And is slated to fighting Mexico`s rising star, undefeated current #9 pound for pound Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in one of the biggest fights in the history of the sport on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I see Floyd winning quite comfortably on points against Alvarez. This I see will be enough to earn Mayweather the title of fighter of the year 2013. Should, however, a monstrous upset occur where Alvarez wins, he would no doubt be the Fighter of the Year. The ratings I used for Alvarez and Guerrero was those of The Ring Magazine. I don`t think I would say ether is top 10 pound for pound. I have Alvarez as #13 and Guerrero was merely top 20 (when he entered the fight). But this should make Floyd “The Ring Magazine” Fighter of The Year.

I could, however, see the Boxing Writers association of America choosing the winner of the unofficial light welterweight tournament. That is if the fight between Lucas Matthysse and champion Danny Garcia happens this year. I have my doubts, because Garcia actually looked a little worried at ringside after Matthysse destroyed Peterson last May in Atlantic City, New Jersey. But if it happens I see Mathysse winning by knockout and making him a legitimate candidate for fighter of the year.
