Canelo won’t be any trouble for Floyd Jr, says Jeff Mayweather

003_Canelo (2)By Dan Ambrose: Jeff Mayweather sees his nephew Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) as having an easy fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s). Jeff isn’t just saying that because he’s related to Floyd Jr. He’s seen Canelo’s fights and thinks he’s a flat-footed that lacks the speed and ingenuity to beat compete with Mayweather in this fight. He sees it as a really fight because of Canelo’s fighting style.

Jeff said, “I don’t see it being close. I think it will be an easier fight than Guerrero. Floyd has already won the 154 title twice by beating Oscar [De La Hoya] and [Miguel] Cotto. Canelo is no different from those guys, just younger…He [Canelo] is good, but flat-footed. I just don’t see nothing in him that will trouble Floyd.”

At this point we really can’t say how good Canelo is or even really good because he arguably lost his last fight to Austin Trout. I think Trout is a good fighter, but the guys Trout beats, I don’t consider them good fighters. I did have Trout beating Canelo by a fairly lopsided decision, so I can’t really call Canelo a good fighter.

I think Canelo is good fighting welterweights, let me put it this way. He’s a heavy, heavy junior middleweight who is good at beating welterweights. I only seen Canelo fight two junior middleweights in Ryan Rhodes and Trout, and like I said, I had Trout beating Canelo.

I think the limiting factor for Canelo is his flat-footed fighting style and his inability to throw more than a tiny handful of punches before gassing out and needing a long rest break.

Canelo is unable to move quickly around the ring, fight on his toes, and throw a lot of shots when he needs to. He’s kind of a pot shot fighter and that’s the wrong kind of opponent to try and beat Mayweather. That’s Mayweather’s game, throwing pot shots. Canelo isn’t going to beat Mayweather at that game, no way.

I think Golden Boy is going to have to go back to the drawing board if they want to find someone that can beat Mayweather. I just hope next time they don’t grab a middleweight or a super middleweight.

Canelo weighs as much as a middleweight after rehydrating, but I hope Golden Boy isn’t going to be digging up middleweights for Mayweather to fight after this. It looks bad when you have much heavier fighters not fighting people in their weight class and instead being matched against lighter guys to gain an advantage.
