Purdy: Devon Alexander better not underestimate me

814(Photo credit: Casino/Showtime) By Scott Gilfoid: Saturday’s fight between IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s) and his opponent challenger Lee Purdy (20-3-1, 13 KO’s) could be every bit as bad as the main event between Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse is good in the fight card at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

If the Matthysse-Peterson fight is good enough it could possibly make up for the mismatch that boxing fans will see in the Alexander-Purdy fight because that promises to be an ugly, ugly mismatch that could put fans off before the main event.

Purdy, 25, basically has no chance to win the fight, as he’s just the replacement opponent filling in for the injured Kell Brook, who lost his chance at the Alexander fight because he kept getting injured while training.

Purdy said this about his fight with Alexander: “My punching power is underestimated, I’m tough and durable and I’m out here to win, I’m not here to make the numbers up. If he underestimates me it’s a big mistake and it will be all over for him. Tune in, it’s going to be a great fight and an explosive performance.”

I’ve seen Purdy fight plenty of times in the past and I don’t think I’d ever describe his fighting style as being “explosive.” I’d say it’s more implosive than explosive.

I just hope Purdy doesn’t fall apart when Alexander starts putting the leather on him because his last opponent 36-year-old light hitting journeyman Cosme Rivera staggered Purdy at one point in the fight.

Alexander may need to carry Purdy if he doesn’t want to get this fight over with too quickly because this fight is too much of a mismatch and it’s not going to be a competitive bout.

Purdy talks a good fight, but it’s just too bad he won’t be able to back it up in the ring because I was hoping for a decent co-feature bout, but this is definitely a disappointing fight.
