Money vs. Pacman

pac006By Tom Drury: First of all I didn’t want to waste my time writing an article on this subject as it has no relevance in the sport of boxing. It seems some writers just cant let the subject go (have nothing else to write about).

A Paquiao/Mayweather match up would have been great back in 2009 and without doubt would have generated some knee trembling ppv/gate revenues and attention from the general public. 2009 has long passed it is now 2013 and boxing has moved on, not only has it moved on, the last four years have shown the boxing fan the big gulf in class that separates Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao.

A fight in 2009 would have been lets say “more competitive.” The facts are it does not take a boxing supremo to understand Pacquiao is not a threat to Mayweather inside the ring. He is about as much as a threat as Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero was on May 4th just passed.

Floyd Mayweather just keeps breaking records and barriers in the sport of boxing, his achievements limitless and his income mouth watering. If you as fans are true followers and boxing enthusiasts you will know Mayweather is the best thing that could have ever happened to boxing, I mean who “honestly” thought the highest paid athlete in all of sports would have been a boxer? A sport many of the general population turn there nose up at, believing only un-educated violent thugs take part in. Mayweather is gaining maximum exposure for this sport we love while showcasing unbelievable talent, the knock-on effect is great with young fighters dreaming of someday becoming the next Floyd Mayweather and securing their futures with financial stability.

Manny Pacquiao on the other hand, where has he gone? We have seen the rapid decline of a good fighter, from calling out Mayweather in 2009 to being out-boxed by the very average Timothy Bradley and knocked out in devastating fashion by the great Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao is scheduled to fight Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios later in the year and people dont be surprised if he loses this one “Bam Bam” is no tomato can. If Pacquiao was to lose in Macau, China it would signal the end for the Filipino fighter without question and all team Pacquiao’s ambitions of landing that huge payday against Mayweather.

Pacquiao and his team have been left wanting by the forever forward moving “Money Team” all Pacquiao had to do was RBT testing for a Mayweather bout and the world would have witnessed the fight they wanted most of all and Paquiao would have made a career defining payday, after watching a recent interview with Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz on www.youtube.com it seems they are clutching at straws to land a Mayweather bout, Koncz saying “we are willing to take a 60/40 split in favour of Floyd and do random testing up to the fight”.

The fight holds no relevance anymore. Personally I thought back in 2009 Mayweather would make light work of Pacquiao. Mayweather is the best boxer to have ever lived better than Ray Robinson and Sugar Ray Leonard and he is a master of taking away whatever his opponent is best at. Lets face it Paquiao is a one dimensional brawler with knockout power he is and never will be a danger to Mayweather, he would be outclassed.
