Dereck Chisora: Back with a bang in fight against Deontay Wilder

chisora53By Dimond Dallas: First off, I know that British heavyweight “Del Boy” already made his comeback on April 20 in a lackluster TKO stoppage win over Hector Avila who was someone just there for Dereck Chisora (16-4, 10 KO’s) to beat and get some much needed rounds in after  his rather extended period of inactivity… but his upcoming fight with Deontay Wilder (28-0, 28 KO’s) next month on June 15h at the Wembley Arena in London, UK is the one fight with which he will be make his ‘real’ return to the ring… where I hope that he decides to comeback with a bang…

Dereck Chisora is a legitimate top name in heavyweight boxing now and there is something about his rise to fame that all boxing promoters and boxers alike must take note of and that is in professional boxing what is important is to have a degree of legitimacy about you as against having a padded up resume with meaningless wins against nameless oppositions…

On paper, it might seem that with 28 wins and all wins by Knockouts would make the latest Knockout sensation from America Wilder a much bigger star than someone like a Chisora who has lost 4 out of his last 6 fights… but that is not the case…

Even with the backing of one of the top promoters in Golden Boy Promotions, Wilder cannot even get a decent sized paying crowd to show up for his matches in US and has to travel across the pond to take on fighters such as Audrey Harrison before and Dereck Chisora now, boxers who are able to fill out stadiums and arenas alike due to their own popularity; the very popularity that a no-name tomato can knockout artist Wilder seeks to piggy back off… but I for one do believe that he has bitten off more than he can chew this time around…

Insofar as his losses go, Chisora lost to Tyson Fury by a close decision, nothing to be ashamed off as Fury has since gone on to become a legitimate top tier contender himself… his next loss was to Robert Helenius, who upto that point was deemed to be the next big thing in boxing by many in what was a controversial Split Decision defeat, hardly something for Chisora to be judged harshly over… next, he took on the most dangerous Boxer in the planet in Vitali Klitschko…

Make no mistake about it, Vitali hurts his opponents like no one else before him and probably on one will do so after him… his victims are almost never the same in ring performers once they go thru a match with him… but Chisora held his own against Vitali, arguably being help along by Vitali’s acutely injured shoulder but he still went the distance against him and that is a feat he could and should be really proud of…

And finally his most high profile and recent loss came against David Haye via a 6th sound stoppage… And Haye landed all those trademark Haymakers but he could not keep Chisora down… he got up from both the knockdowns and beat the 10 count each time and a very convincing argument could have been made that had the referee not stepped in to stop the fight when he did Chisora would have gone the distance against Haye too…

But even with this defeat, like with each defeat before this, Chisora’s star has only risen higher and higher…

This is what young boxers and boxing promoters alike need to take note of, this is boxing and not some song and dance TV reality show where the only thing that matters is winning each time you go out there… someone like a Dereck Chisora is a prof that in boxing your star can keep on rising to greater and greater heights despite losses if you go out there and compete against top tier competition, even when you fail to beat them…

I for one am already looking forward to 15th June 2013, when this fight is scheduled to take place. Whatever fame and notoriety Wilder has gained from being the man who retired a listless over-the-hill Audrey Harrison will only help Chisora expedite his march towards a title shot of his own once he ends Wilder’s meaningless little unbeaten run…
