wilder46By Scott Gilfoid: British promoter Frank Warren has successfully set up a fight between boxing’s newest heavyweight superstar in waiting Deontay “Bronze Bomber” Wilder (28-0, 28 KO’s) against the down in his luck British heavyweight Derek Chisora (16-4, 10 KO’s) on June 15th at the Wembley Arena in London, UK.

The fight is scheduled for 12 rounds, but let’s face; the fight won’t go more than four rounds tops. My guess is one two rounds at best. This fight reminds me of the first fight between a then 25-year-old George Foreman and Joe Frazier back in 1973.

Foreman annihilated the smaller Frazier in just two rounds, knocking him down six times in the process of winning the fight. The 6’1” Chisora will be giving away six inches in height to the 6’7” Deontay and he’s going to be right in the line of fire for Deontay’s powerful right hands for as long as this fight lasts, which shouldn’t be that long.

Chisora doesn’t know how to fight defensively and will likely plod right into one of Deontay’s sledgehammer right hands. I suspect Chisora will be staggered and basically out on his feet after getting nailed by Deontay, and he’ll then be finished off right away by a single right hand.

There probably won’t be any windmill punches from Deontay in this fight because I don’t think he’s going to need it.

It’s surprising this fight was made because I thought Golden Boy Promotions had bigger things planned for Deontay. There was talk of Deontay facing some of the young lions in the heavyweight division so that he could test his power against some of the top contenders. But putting Deontay in against 2nd tier fighter Chisora is more of a lateral move from his last fight against Audley Harrison, who Wilder smashed out in one round last April in one of the most impressive knockouts of the year thus far.

You’d like to see Deontay to be pushed forward instead of sideways with another easy fight, but I’m hearing the offer that Warren made to Golden Boy was a good one, so they obviously didn’t want to turn down the best money that the young Deontay has ever made in his career.

Deontay wants to fight British heavyweights Tyson Fury and David Price, but there’s a long line in front of him with Fury. As far as Price goes, he has a rematch with Tony Thompson in July and if he loses that fight then a fight between him and Deontay won’t be appealing.

Also on the June 15th card is welterweight Frankie Gavin facing Denton Vassell in a tough, tough fight for Gavin. This is a definite toss-up fight and I can Gavin losing it or at the very least winning another controversial decision like the one he had over Curtis Woodhouse in 2011. Vassell is still unbeaten but he also hasn’t faced anyone with a pulse before, so it’s hard to say how he’ll do in this fight.

Super middleweight Paul Smith will continue to try and pick up the pieces of his career with another easy fight this one against Tony Dodson. Smith was stopped in the 2nd round by George Groves in November 2011. Smith has fought only once since then.
