Andre Ward: Canelo-Trout was a really close fight

canelo18By Chris Williams: WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward thought the scores were a joke for last night’s fight between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout and he saw it as a close fight.

Ward said on his social media site “Just watched the fight with Trout & Canelo. Wow, that was really a close fight! I have to watch it again. Trout showed mucho heart! What’s the deal with putting the belt on Canelo BEFORE the decision was announced? Really?? I have a very low tolerance for bad scoring.”

The judges in Texas had Canelo winning the fight by the scores of 118-109, 116-111 and 115-112. It sounds like Ward saw the fight as a draw on his first viewing because he literally couldn’t pick a winner. That probably shoots the legs out from under the fans of Canelo, who saw his win over Trout as a lopsided one for some strange reason.

I saw the fight I had Trout winning for four rounds against a passive fighter that was only fighting in spurts. I had no dog in this hunt because I’m not a fan of either fighter, but Trout landed more punches, Canelo wasn’t active, and the open scoring by the WBC seemed to play in Canelo’s favor once the ridiculous scores of the judges were given to Trout after the 4th and 8th rounds.

What Ward should be doing is calling Canelo out for a fight at 160 because if Canelo is calling out Mayweather to move up one entire division to fight him at 154 instead of 147, then Canelo should move up one division to fight Ward at 160 with Ward coming down from 168. Both guys weigh the same when they fight. Ward comes into his fights in the low 170s, and Canelo just weighed 172 lbs for the Trout fight last Saturday night.

If both guys are fighting at 172-175, then why shouldn’t Canelo and Ward fight? Obviously, Golden Boy would never let Canelo fight Ward because it’s not about size; it’s about talent and Ward is just too talented and he’s got the same size as Canelo.

I think they could even put that fight in Texas with the same judges and Ward would easily win. Make it open scoring again and put the same guys on the judging panel and let’s see how Canelo does against Ward? If he’s calling out a guy that weighs 20 pounds less than him in Mayweather then Canelo should have no problems fighting someone that weighs exactly the same amount as him when he steps inside the ring in facing Ward.
