groves56By Scott Gilfoid: An announcement is expected to be made this Monday by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport that super middleweight contender George Groves (16-0, 12 KO’s) will leave Frank Warren Promotions and signing with his stable, according to the dailystar.co.uk.

Hearn plans on putting Groves on the undercard of the May 25th fight card head-lined by his fighter IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch facing Mikkel Kessler in a rematch at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

In moving to Matchroom Sport, Groves’ fights will now be televised on Sky, so he’ll likely be reaching a lot more boxing fans than before with BoxNation. It’s a good deal in that respect at least. Other than that, Groves might be able to twist Hearn’s arm into having him set up an in-house fight between him and Froch if they can convince Froch to take that fight.

I don’t see that happening, but in theory you would think that Groves would at least have a better chance now that he’s with the same promoter as Froch. Even if Groves never does get a fight with Froch, which is what I see happening, he’ll still benefit from his fights being televised on Sky. But he’ll have to win his fights if he wants to become a star because it’s not enough to have his fights shown to the larger boxing public; he needs to win, and that’s where I have my doubts. I can’t see Groves ever beating Kessler, Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell, Edwin Rodriguez or Arthur Abraham.

In moving to Hearn’s stable, Groves’ previously scheduled March 16th fight against Mouhamed Ali Ndiaye for the vacant EBU super middleweight title is now up in smoke. That fights obviously not going to happen, as Groves will be fighting two months later on the Froch-Kessler card on May 25th.

This could be a good thing for Groves if he’s got the talent to do something with the attention he’ll be getting by fighting in front of huge audiences on Sky, but if he’s going to be fighting nobodies like he’s been doing or if he gets whipped when he does step it up against one of them champions, then it really won’t matter that he’s with Matchroom Sport. It’s start with needing the talent to benefit from this. Does Groves have the talent to beat Froch, Dirrell, Ward, Kessler and Abraham? I’d say that’s a big no.
