Froch: I was at 75% last time I fought Kessler; this time he’s getting the full Cobra

froch47By Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (30-2, 22 KO’s) is still claiming he wasn’t at his best the last time he faced Mikkel Kessler (46-2, 35 KO’s) three years ago in Denmark, and was beaten by him in a 12 round unanimous decision loss.

Froch complains that he had problems getting to Denmark, how his girlfriend was pregnant at the time, and how the venue for the fight had changed several times.

Froch said on his column at thisisnottingham.com “This time he’s not getting a 75 percent Carl Froch…he is going to get the full Cobra…the truth is I had completely lost my appetite for it after the ash cloud had grounded all planes across Europe.”

So let me get this straight. Because of a slight delay in Froch getting to Denmark for the fight, it was enough to put him off the job of beating Kessler? Oh man, that is one weak excuse. I mean, isn’t the fight the main thing? Why was the delay in travel so upsetting that it caused Froch to lose enough focus to where he was only at 75% for the fight?

This reminds of Froch’s excuses for his loss to the talented WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward in the Super Six finals in December 2011 where Froch said he was put off balance by being in New York around Christmas time.

That was actually funny. I still remember the monologue Froch made last November after he beat Yusaf Mack. Froch said this at the post-fight press conference:

“I lost the last fight with Andre Ward before I even stepped through the ropes, because mentally I wasn’t switched on. Physically I was drained. I was in Manhattan, sitting in New York a second time before Christmas.”

Why on earth was Froch talking about the Ward fight at the Froch-Mack post-fight press conference? I didn’t have a clue, but it was a real buzz-kill to hear Froch droning on about the past that had no relevance to what actually happened in his win over Mack. If being in New York around Christmas time was enough for Froch to lose to Ward, then maybe he shouldn’t travel outside of the UK anymore.

I just hope there aren’t any excuses about his delay in getting to London from his home city of Nottingham. I can just hear the excuses Froch could dream up for a loss to Kessler in a second fight. ‘Well, I was stuck in traffic getting to London, and that put me off my game 25%.’
