By Dan Ambrose: It looks like WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez threw away his December fight date for nothing because he’s probably not going to get the Floyd Mayweather Jr. to face him on this date. He wanted Mayweather, Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez for this fight date, and he even gave his December date thinking he was going to get one of those threw.
It looks like the only option available to him is a tainted Miguel Cotto, and I don’t think Alvarez or the boxing want that fight. However, Alvarez can always step it up and fight a real junior middleweight in WBA 154 champ Austin Trout on May 4th, if Mayweather doesn’t face him and looks like he’s not going to.
It’s too bad Alvarez didn’t fight in this month because someone should have told him that the odds of him getting one of those three big names that he told his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions were slim. He might be able to still get Cotto, but he’s going to look kind of silly fighting a guy that has lost his last two fights. Of course, Alvarez hasn’t exactly been facing devastating opposition lately.
Alvarez’s last opponent was a light welterweight in Josesito Lopez, and his opponent before that was a totally shot Shane Mosley, so I guess Cotto somehow looks good when you looks those guys.
That’s not an ideal situation though because Alvarez isn’t going to get much credit from knowledgeable boxing fans if Golden Boy is able to get Cotto take the fight and Alvarez then beats him. Why would Alvarez want to put himself in the situation where no one, aside from casual boxing fans who have no clue that Cotto has lost his last two fights, will give him credit?
The best option that Alvarez can take if he wants to get a fighter that will definitely face is to agree to fight Cotto’s conqueror Austin Trout. That’s the fight Alvarez needs to take because he badly needs to prove himself to the hardcore boxing fans that he’s not afraid to fight a real junior middleweight with talent, and not just someone that is getting old and is losing all the time. Cotto has lost his last two fights, so he shouldn’t even be in the equation.
Alvarez’s wins over Ryan Rhodes, Matthew Hatton, Lovemore N’dou, Kermit Cintron and Alfonso Gomez are just weak wins. It’s not enough to put Alvarez in the class of someone that deserves a better fight against Mayweather. If Alvarez can’t even fight the top guys in the division like Trout, Vanes Martirosyan and Erislandy Lara, then why should he get a better fight against Floyd?
