Image: Roach: Pacquiao got careless against MarquezBy Eric Thomas: Freddie Roach was quick with the explanations for what went wrong tonight with his fighter Manny Pacquiao getting knocked cold by Juan Manuel Marquez in the 6th round in front of a huge sellout crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After Marquez knocked Pacquiao out with a sledgehammer of a right hand in the 6th, Roach said as quoted by the Latimes.com “After he [Pacquiao] got knocked down in the third, he was fine, in change, but then he got careless.”

You can say that again. Pacquiao was bum rushing Marquez almost in the same way that Ricky Hatton was blindly charging Pacquiao in their fight three years ago.

In the 6th, Pacquiao attempted a feint to try and get Marquez out of position in the last second of the round, but Marquez didn’t buy the feint and blasted Pacquiao with a right hand that landed square in his face. Pacquiao fell immediately like a log on the canvas and landed with his face first. He was out for at least a minute. His wife Jinkie took it pretty hard and was seen crying in the arms of Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who tried his best to console her.

One had a sense that Pacquiao was going to be poleaxed sooner or later in this fight after Marquez knocked Pacquiao down with a looping right hand in the 3rd that sent Pacquiao crashing down on the canvas back first with his head bouncing off the canvas.

Pacquiao came from that to get a knockdown of Marquez in the 5th when he knocked him down with a left. The two fighters went toe-to-toe after that knockdown and things looked a little bleak for Marquez as the round ended. He had been trapped against the ropes in the last 15 seconds of the round and had taken some heavy shots by Pacquiao.

Pacquiao looked like he was in charge of the fight and perhaps on his way to a victory in the 6th, but he got a little careless as Roach said and charged forward and got nailed by Marquez for the knockout blow.
