Mares to move up to featherweight in 2013 to go after 3rd world title

mares34By Chris Williams: WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0, 13 KO’s) is frustrated with his inability to get a title unification bout against WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire set up so that the two fighters can prove who the better guy is between them at 122. However, Mares isn’t going to just sit and wait for Donaire in 2013. Mares told the record.com.mx that he plans on moving up to the featherweight division in 2013 to look to win a third world title.

Mares, 27, has already picked up titles in the bantamweight and super bantamweight divisions, but now he wants to get one in the featherweight division against one of the champions.

Before Mares does this, he may first fight IBF bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz. Mares’ promoters at Golden Boy Promotions really wants to make this fight, and while Mares is okay with taking it, he doesn’t appear to be all that excited about getting in the ring with the hard hitting, high volume punching Santa Cruz.
Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum wants to get another fight in for Donaire in the first of next year against WBA World super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Arum reportedly says he wants to match Donaire against Mares in the next fight after that, and it should be interesting to see if this actually takes place because Arum hasn’t been putting Donaire in with Rigondeaux and Mares all this time, as if he was reluctant to do so.

Mares defeated WBA bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno by a 12 round unanimous decision last November in a mostly one-sided fight that took place at super bantamweight. In his other fights, Mares has beaten Eric Morel, Joseph Agbeko (twice), and Vic Darchinyan.

Mares has a habit of throwing low in his fights, as he throws a lot of body shots when he fights and his aim is frequently off. However, despite routinely throwing countless low blows, he rarely loses any points for the bending of the rules.

Donaire says he wants the Mares fight but whether he ends up fighting Mares will be largely up to his promoter Bob Arum.
