Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer wants to try and put together a fight with Burns first off, but if that fight can’t be put together he’ll go ahead and look to match Broner with Abril instead.

Schaefer said to ESPN “I am trying to do the Burns fight. [I’ll be] talking again with Frank Warren [Burns’ promoter]. I am going to convince him to go directly to Broner for February 16. But if Burns does not work out then maybe Richard Abril.”

I personally would much rather see Broner face Abril because I rate him as a better fighter over Burns by far. What I especially like about Abril is he uses the same Mayweather shoulder roll defense as Broner, and it would give boxing fans a good chance to see two fighters with a very similar fighting style, but different in terms of power. Broner is the much bigger puncher, but he doesn’t have Abril’s 5’10” height and long reach. Abril would likely try and box and move and look to land single shots in the same manner that Floyd Mayweather does.

Burns had his opponent Jose Ocampo pull out of their scheduled fight this Saturday night. It’s now unclear whether Burns will be still fighting on the card. It would make sense for him not to because even though he would likely be facing a weak, non-threatening opponent that he could easily beat, there would still be a chance that he could suffer a cut, broken nose or some kind of injury that would wipe out his big fight with Broner in February.

There’s not much time to heal if Burns suffers an injury in Saturday’s fight. That’s okay if he doesn’t really want to fight Broner, because it would give him an excuse not to fight him, but if he does really want to fight him then it’s a really risky thing for him to be fighting on Saturday, December 15th with a big money fight with Broner staring him in the face on February 16th.
