By Paul Walsh: Ask yourself the question, why is it that heavyweight division no longer headline in Las Vegas? The answer, the Klitschko brothers. It is no secret that the Klitschko brothers are in control of boxing’s elite division and it has been this way since the retirement of Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson. Hate them or love them this is fact but if like me you agree with British heavyweight David Haye, they are solely to blame for the decline of the division.
With fights only in Germany against unknown “safe” opponents it is easy to see why they have been undefeated for so long. The fact that the Haye v Chisora bout got more media coverage than Wladmir’s fight with Toney Thompson (which was on the same night) says it all. The Klitschkos are dull to watch, lack personality and this is replicated in the ring so I am firmly in the Haye camp, the sooner they leave the division the better.
It is not as though we are short of exciting fighters in the heavyweight division, far from it. David Price, Seth Mitchell and Alexander Povetkin to name a few but the Klitschkos make it impossible to negotiate and do business with them which is why these big fights will not happen whilst they are around.
On the bright side the Klitschkos are on their way out and that will open the door for some exciting bouts such as Mitchell vs. Price and Haye vs. Povetkin. One things for sure, I will not be mourning the loss of the Ukrainian brothers to the sport of boxing. I cannot wait for heavyweights to headline Las Vegas and once again restore past glories!!
