By Chris Williams: On the Jimmy Kimmel show, Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KO’s) gave his strategy of how he’s going to beat Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KO’s) in Las Vegas next month, saying “I’m going to pressure him”. This has been Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach’s mantra since the fight with the 39-year-old Marquez was signed. It’s going to be “Pressure” and “a lot of punches thrown.”
It’s all been tried before by Pacquiao, as well as his in and out attacks, which is something else that Roach says will be used for this the fourth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez. But it’s nothing that Marquez hasn’t seen before from the Filipino and you have won wonder exactly what Roach and Pacquiao are trying to accomplish by using this kind of strategy?
If they’re both serious then what can they can get from using the same old tired strategies that have been tried and failed in three previous fights between Pacquiao and Marquez?
It’s like two guys playing chess with one another where one guy keeps using the same game strategy over and over again without real success. He then says he’s going to use the strategy again, as if it’s something he’s not used before. It’s forlorn at this point, and if this is all Roach has for his fighter then it’s pretty disappointing.
There are some who feel that Roach has Pacquiao giving out false information about how he’s going to fight in order to throw Marquez off by having him waste valuable training time thinking Pacquiao will be looking to pressure him. If that’s the case then the only strategy that Roach has for Pacquiao is for him to use the in and out attacks that he frequently uses in his fights. However, that’s all old stuff too because Marquez has seen that look from Pacquiao and it never worked in the past in their fights.
Marquez merely timed Pacquiao and met him with hard shots each time he attempted to surge forward to land his power shots. Pacquiao’s in and out fighting strategy worked against Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito, but it failed miserably in the three previous fights with Marquez. If that’s all Roach can come up with then he really needs to go back to the drawing board and learn some new things for his fighter because that’s not going to work against Marquez.
