Magee beats Kessler if he turns up the power

Image: Magee beats Kessler if he turns up the powerBy Scott Gilfoid: Brian Magee (36-4-1, 25 KO’s) beats Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34 KO’s) on December 8th if he fights the way he did against the Danes Rudy Markussen and Mads Larsen, both of whom Magee turned up the power on and took them both out.

Magee has always had excellent power, but he didn’t start sitting down on his punches until recently when he started showing how good of a puncher he can be with his KO wins over Markussen, Larsen and Stevie McGuire. Magee’s power is quite good, and he’s facing the perfect guy for him to knockout in Kessler, who wilted under the power of Andre Ward in 2009 in the Super Six tournament.

Technically, Kessler lost that fight by an 11th round technical decision but a lot of boxing fans saw Kessler on the verge of being knocked out had it gone on a little while longer.

The winner of the Magee-Kessler fight has already been ordered to fight WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward, although I have SERIOUS doubts whether Kessler will ever agree to fight Ward again if he comes out on top in the Magee clash. I can’t see Kessler getting within 2000 miles of Ward until their careers are over.

I know Magee is up for facing Ward, because he’s a real trooper and he knows that a fight with Ward, the best super middleweight in the division by far, will be the best opportunity for him to make a name for himself even in losing.

To get past Kessler all Magee has to do is to use his jab continuously by focusing on throwing it as hard as possible. Kessler didn’t like eating Ward’s powerful jab and that seemed to really throw him off. Another thing Magee needs to do is fight really aggressively by loading up on everything he throws. Kessler was knocked down in his last fight by Allan Green in the 1st round, and Green might have won that fight had he taken the fight to Kessler instead of backing off and letting Kessler back into the fight.
