Image: Kessler vs. Magee: Brian to wade into hostile waters on 12/8By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World super middleweight champion Brian Magee defends his strap against Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34 KO’s) on December 8th in Kessler’s home country of Denmark in Herning. It’s unfortunate that the fight couldn’t take place in neutral venue because it seems like Kessler is always fighting at home.

I guess it gives him an advantage because of all the loud Danish fans that come to support him in high numbers. However, Magee is a professional and he’s not going to let Kessler’s fans unnerve him in this fight. Magee knows what to do and he’s obviously spotted Kessler’s weakness in terms of his chin.

Kessler was knocked down in his last fight against Allan Green last May and that fight showed loud and clear that Kessler has lost a few steps and is ready to get beaten again. In the best it took guys like Joe Calzaghe and Andre Ward to beat him, but now I think the standard has been lowered because Magee is ready to be the next one that snatches Kessler’s well known scalp.

Having a scalp like that to add to Magee’s collection is going to be a really nice trophy because will look good on his resume and open doors for him to get bigger fights. What Magee needs is some nice money fights against the likes of Ward, Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch. Beating Kessler will get him those fights.

It might be in Magee’s best interest to try and KO Kessler because I don’t think he wants to risk getting jobbed in Denmark. I don’t think there’s much of a worry there but Carl Froch was complaining long and hard after he was beaten by Kessler in DeMarco back in 2010. I saw the fight a dozen times and I didn’t think Froch got jobbed, but more than a few Froch fans still to this day think it was highway robbery.

Okay, so Magee should play it safe and look to knock Kessler out cold so that there isn’t any chance of him maybe winning a close controversial decision. The way to do that is for Magee to take the fight to Kessler early and look to take his head off with every punch. Like I said, Green had Kessler down but failed to follow up with additional head shots after Kessler got back up.
