Image: Guerrero: I'll knock Mayweather outBy Dan Ambrose: WBC interim welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO’s) seemed to be in a state of euphoria after his 12 round decision win over Andre Berto last night because Guerrero was making all kinds of outlandish statements at the post-fight press conference saying that he’ll knock Floyd Mayweather Jr. if given the chance and remarking that he now deserves to be in the top 10 pound for pound list off of his win over Berto.

Guerrero’s feet didn’t seem to be on ground because he didn’t look all that good in winning to me, and certainly not good enough for him to be able to beat a boxing great like Mayweather or be added to a pound for pound list.

Guerrero said “If you don’t put me on the pound for pound list then you’re just hating on me. He [Berto] never hurt me. I knew Berto has a soft chin and I would put him down. Berto hits hard but nowhere near as hard as [Selcuk] Aydin. Whenever Aydin hit me it hurt. I want to fight the best fighters. That’s why I want to fight Floyd Mayweather. People think I’m just looking to cash out by fighting the best fighters, but I want to be the best. I don’t just want to get paid. If there had been 10 to 15 more seconds [in the 12th round], Berto would have been out in the 12th. My father wanted me to box more behind my jab but I wanted to punish him. I’ve got heavy hands. I really feel Mayweather, I’ll take him out.”

Guerrero won’t know Mayweather out, let’s be clear on this. He didn’t hit hard enough and is more of a slapper than a puncher. Guerrero knocked Berto down twice in the fight, but the knockdown where he hurt Berto in the 1st was when Guerrero held onto Berto’s head with his right hand and then clubbed him over and over until Berto hit the deck.

The referee did nothing to stop this and he should have waived off the knockdown. Holding and hitting isn’t allowed in boxing. If Guerrero were to turn a fight with Mayweather into anything goes brawl I’d favor Mayweather in that kind of fight any day of the week. He can be dirty as we saw in his win over Victor Ortiz, and with his hand speed he’d give Guerrero serious trouble.
