Image: Pacquiao extends contract with Top Rank to 2014, Mayweather fight a possibilityBy Chris Williams: 33-year-old Manny Pacquiao has reportedly extended his contract with Top Rank for another two more years until 2014 with the possibility that he’ll be facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in April, according to Fighthype.com. If this story actually true, the contract will likely finish out Pacquiao’s career unless he’s able to somehow keep from deteriorating further in the next two years.

I’d be very surprised if Pacquiao is still fighting at a high level at that point because he’ll about to 36, and that’s a ripe for a small fighter like him especially with the way that he’s moving nowadays around the ring.

The part about Pacquiao getting a fight against Mayweather is the interesting part, because that’s probably not going to happen. I hope for Pacquiao’s sake he didn’t resign with Top Rank thinking that the fight with Mayweather could get made, because I just don’t see it. As soon as Bob Arum starts with the need of an outdoor stadium needing to be built before Pacquiao can fight Mayweather the negotiations will be dead in the water within seconds. Also, if Arum starts the negotiations by saying it’s got to be a 50-50 deal, then that’ll likely kill it as well.

I really can’t see Arum negotiating a contract between his fighter Pacquiao and Mayweather with Mayweather getting the bigger cut of the revenue. As such, there probably won’t ever be a fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather. But I hope for Pacquiao’s sake that Top Rank didn’t promise him that they would put together a fight between him and Mayweather, because I think Pacquiao will be let down when that doesn’t happen. There are so many ways to undermine the negotiations to drive Mayweather off, and I can see witches brew of negotiating requests that will send Mayweather in the opposite direction.

With Mayweather out of their hair, Pacquiao will then likely finish out his days fighting one Top Rank stable fighter after another. My guess is he’ll fight Marquez a 5th, 6th and possibly 7th time. If boxing fans are still willing to dump their cash on that fight, I doubt Top Rank will want to stop with the repeat fights.
