Image: Guerrero thinks Berto is vulnerable to his powerBy Dan Ambrose: Interim WBC welterweight champion Robert Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO’s) has the so called big fight that he’s been hoping to get for years in his November 24th battle against former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (28-1, 21 KO’s) and already boxing fans see Guerrero as out of his class in this fight. The bout will be taking place at the Citizens Business Arena, in Ontario, California.

Oddly enough, Guerrero thinks he’s got the power to hurt Berto and possibly stop him. This is kind of incredible given how weak and sloppy Guerrero looked in his first fight at welterweight against Selcuk Aydin last July. Guerrero won the fight, but he failed to impress or even come close to impressing against a fighter who looked terrible.

Guerrero said to RingTV “As far as me not carrying my power at 147 pounds? You know, [Luis] Collazo don’t carry power at 147 pounds, and I saw Berto get hurt pretty badly in that fight. So, when you have a soft chin, all that it takes is a feather to put you down.”

I saw the Berto-Collazo fight and I never saw Collazo hurt Berto for an instant in that fight. What I did see what that Collazo was able to take advantage of Berto’s lack of inside fighting skills by keeping the action in close, smothering Berto’s offense and wearing him down somewhat late in the fight. However, I don’t think Guerrero will be able to do the same thing against Berto because he doesn’t have the same kind of inside fighting skills that Collazo had going for hi, and he’s also not a legit welterweight like Collazo was. Guerrero is still basically a lightweight without power or stamina now moving up in weight due to his high ambition.

Berto’s power and speed is going to give Guerrero a lot of problems in this fight, and I can’t see Guerrero doing well at all. He says his teams is working on a plan to try and beat Berto, and I’m guess that’s going to entail a lot of boxing from the outside with Guerrero jabbing a lot. That’s probably not going to be enough for Guerrero to get the win. Berto was beaten recently by Victor Ortiz last year in April, but Ortiz has a lot more physically tools than Guerrero does. Ortiz is blessed with power, size, speed and athleticism and that’s what carried him through to victory. Guerrero doesn’t have any of that, so he’s probably going to lose and lose badly.
