(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Jim Dower: WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16 KO’s) obliterated former four division world champion Erik Morales (52-9, 36 KOs) with a 4th round knockout on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. In the 4th, Garcia, 24, landed a picture perfect left hook that connected to the jaw of Morales that sent him down bouncing on the canvas as he landed. The referee then immediately halted the fight.
Morales didn’t see the left hook coming as he was in the process of throwing his own left hook at the time.
In the last seconds of the 3rd round, Garcia badly staggered Morales. After the round ended, Morales staggered back to his corner after going to the wrong corner.
In the 4th, Morales still didn’t look recovered from the right hand he had taken in the previous round and was hit hard by Garcia in the opening seconds. Morales finally started to fight back and landed some nice jabs until running into Garcia’s big left hook when backed up against the ropes.
With this loss you got to figure that Morales’ career is over. This rematch shouldn’t have taken place in the first place because the first fight was so one-sided that it didn’t warrant a rematch. Obviously, Morales wanted the fight because it gave him another opportunity to get a nice payday in fighting for a title while at the same time giving a chance to try and avenge his loss.
