Froch: A rematch with me and Andre Ward would be much different

Image: Froch: A rematch with me and Andre Ward would be much differentBy Scott Gilfoid: It seems that IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch can’t forget the schooling he got from the talented WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward last December in the Super Six tournament finals because Froch is flapping his gums about the loss instead of accepting that he fought a superior talent who put him in his place.

Froch said “I’m the closest guy to ever come to beating [Ward], and I had a bad night at the office. I under performed that night…The rematch would be different…stylistically, he’s a spoiler…that’s why he has no fans. He can’t sell a ticket in California, which is where he’s from.”

So sad. Froch can’t seem to let go of his loss to Ward. It wouldn’t be so bad if Froch was willing to stick around to actually fight Ward again, but with his promoter Eddie Hearn talking about Froch only having three more fights left in his career – Yusaf Mack, Lucian Bute and Mikkel Kessler – it just looks like Froch is jabbering away with the relative safety of his nearing retirement.

As far as Froch saying he gave Ward his toughest fight of his career, I disagree completely. Journeyman Darnell Boone and Sakio Bika gave Ward a tougher time than Froch. Boone had Ward badly hurt after knocking him down in the 4th round with a tremendous right hand in their fight in 2005, and Bika gave Ward all kinds of problems in 2010. The Froch-Ward fight wasn’t all that close in terms of the actual fight event though two judges scored 115-113 each, but the more accurate score for that fight was 118-110, which is what the third judge scored it. Froch likes to point out how two of the judges scored it close, but those were laughable scores and that scares me to know that there are two judges out there still judging who saw the Froch-Ward fight as a close affair. Ignoring the terrible judging for that fight, Ward dominated Froch with a broken left hand that he fought with for the full 12 rounds. Ward left up on Froch in the last couple of rounds due to pain in his left hand, otherwise it would have been 11 rounds to 1 for Ward. I had Froch winning 2 to 3 rounds at best.

Froch hasn’t improved since the Ward fight, and if they were to battle again it would be the same result with Ward winning easily. But this time Ward wouldn’t have a broken hand, and I imagine the judges would be completely different this time, so we wouldn’t have the two guys working that saw the first fight as close.
