Image: Erik Morales fails drug testBy Gareth Rees: One day before his rematch with Danny Garcia (24-0) for the WBC and WBA Light Welterweight tiles, it has been reported Erik Morales (52-8) has failed a drugs test. Morales the former four-weight world champion was hoping to avenge his unanimous decision loss to Garcia back in March this year, on Saturday night at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn.

The early reports have suggested that Morales’ ‘A’ sample tested positive for clenbuterol, a drug that is commonly used by asthma sufferers but can be used as a performance enhancing drug. ESPN has reported that the fight is likely to still go ahead as the ‘B’ sample is currently being tested and the results will not be available until after Saturday night.

Morales failed a random drugs test administered by the US Anti-Doping Agency, who have been in the news recently after charging cyclist Lance Armstrong last week. But Golden Boy’s Richard Schaefer has said there were some “irregularities”, but doesn’t want people to judge Morales before the results of the second test are announced. Schaefer says “There is not going to be a rush to judgement.” He added “Morales is a legendary fighter. And really, nobody deserves a rush to judgement. You are innocent until proven guilty.”

If true, this failed drugs test by Morales will have followed other big name fighters such as Antonio Tarver, Lamont Peterson and Andre Berto who have all failed drugs tests over the last year. This will also add to Floyd Mayweather Jr’s argument and calls to have the sport, be clean and there be more drugs tests taking place. But until the ‘B’ sample test results are announced, we will have to look forward to what should be an absolute barn-burner of a fight.
