Image: Andre Ward won't become a super star if nobody wants to fight himBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward’s incredible talent has put him in a bind to where few of the top fighters in the super middleweight now want to fight him after he spanked Carl Froch, Arthur Abraham, Allan Green, Sakio Bika, and Chad Dawson. Ward has basically cleaned up the super middleweight division while also beating the best fighther in the light heavyweight division in Chad Dawson.

It’s great that Ward has gotten to the top of the mountain in the 168 pound division, but the problem is that Ward got there too quickly and he’s still far from being the star that he should be. With the top super middleweights now totally reluctant to get in the ring with Ward, he’s faced with a situation where he may be left spinning his wheels while he waits for one of the top guys to fight him.

I think Ward will be waiting the remainder of his career if he’s hoping that Abraham, Froch and Kessler will fight him again. That’s probably not going to happen. Ward whipped all of them so badly that we’ll probably never see them step up to the plate again to fight him. The thing is these are Euro fighters who make tons of good cash fighting in their home countries. They’re like big fish in small ponds that bring a lot of money.

Ward doesn’t have that in the U.S. There’s too many other talented fighters for which Ward has to compete with to attract the eyeballs of the fans on HBO. It’s not enough that Ward is dominating everyone, he needs good opposition. Ward also needs to do a TON of work at marketing his fights and improving his personality. He’s too calm and nice. Ward needs to be more like Floyd Mayweather Jr. if he wants to attract attention of the fans to his fights. I don’t expect Ward to understand this, but that’s on him. He can be the best fighter in the division but people still won’t care about him until he becomes more of a personality and not just a nice guy.
