By Dan Ambrose: The Nevada State Athletic Commission has now officially confirmed the positive test results for former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for metabolites of marijuana. This puts to rest the WBC president Jose Sulaiman’s desire to wait until another test had been done before considering Chavez Jr. as having tested positive for the banned drug.
Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, told RingTV “We have received all the test results, both pre and post fight tests…There are no additional charges. We will just have one complaint against Julio for marijuana.”
This is Chavez Jr’s third infraction. His first was for diuretics in 2009. His second came earlier this year when he was his alcohol related DUI, and now the third being the marijuana positive test results. Chavez Jr. could now lose his entire $3 million purse for his fight against Sergio Martinez, and also receive a suspension of a year.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission will meet next week to decide Chavez Jr’s fate. Under and ideal scenario, Chavez Jr. could lose only a small portion of his $3 million purse and receive a suspension of six months. However, but with this being his 3rd infraction the chances are high that Chavez Jr. will potentially lose a lot of money from his purse as well as receive a suspension of close to a year.
A long suspension will cool off a lot of the interest from fans in seeing Chavez Jr. fight Sergio Martinez again.
Chavez Jr. has a lot of work cut out for him before he’s ready to face Martinez again and I’m not just talking about his suspension. He needs to improve in a dramatic way for him to be competitive with Martinez because he looked like he didn’t belong out there with him until the last minute of the fight in the 12th round.
