Image: Khan rejects Guzman: I want someone more credible than thatBy William Mackay: Despite former two division world champion Joan Guzman (33-0-1, 20 KO’s) sporting an unbeaten record and a high ranking in the light welterweight division, Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) says he’s not interested in taking that fight because he doesn’t see Guzman as a viable alternative for his next fight on December 15th.

Khan said to the Manchester Evening News “I want someone who is a bit more credible than him. I’ve come from world title fights and he might be a bit below that…It will either be in England or American, December 15.”

Khan says he’s got several fighters that he’s looking to choose from for his next fight on December 15th. It’s probably going to be someone well below the level of Guzman, though.

How can Guzman be below Khan’s level if he’s still unbeaten and Khan has lost his last two fights? Khan hasn’t held a title since losing to Lamont Peterson last year. While it’s true that Khan has fought in world title fights in his last two bouts, he’s still lost them both.

Khan doesn’t seem to have fully come to terms with the fact that he’s a mere contender with a ranking that’s now below that of Guzman, #2 WBA, #4 IBF. Sometimes the ego is the last thing to go with a fighter when he starts to fall apart and lose fights.

No one would blame Khan if he says no to a fight against a dangerous puncher like Guzman, because after all Khan is coming off of a knockout loss in his last fight against WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last July. But to say that the higher ranked and still unbeaten Guzman isn’t a credible fighter just makes Khan come across like he’s not really digested the fact that he’s lost his last two fights and is on the verge of being knocked out of the top 15 if he takes another loss or two. Guzman is probably too dangerous for Khan at this point given his string of defeats.

Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach may soon get the ax from Khan, as he’s actively looking for a trainer in New York right now.
