By Mark Havey: Floyd Mayweather Sr is undeniably one of the more colourful and captivating characters in boxing. He is a well esteemed trainer and was once a reasonable boxer. But he is best known for Fathering unbeaten champion Floyd Mayweather (43-0, KO’s 26), who he affectionately refers to as ‘Little Floyd’.
He once trained his future hall of famer son. How much credit he can claim for ‘Little Floyds’ accomplishments has always been called into question. Not by him, but by his son. The Father claims that he not only sired a champion, he developed one. The Son rubbishes this claim by steeping praise on his Uncle and current trainer, Roger Mayweather. Surely they both deserve credit?
In a recent interview with Examiner.com, Floyd Sr made a reference to his turbulent relationship with his son “Whatever it is that we went through, man, I’m pretty sure it can be worked out. That’s my son, and I’m going to be his Father forever. I don’t know what else to tell you other than that’s my son and I love him. I’m pretty sure he got some love in him for me too”
He didn’t stop there. When asked if Pacquiao could beat Mayweather should it ever occur, he came alive, “I repeat, if Pac takes the test, my son will put him to rest! And I will say this here and now, there is no chance in hell he can win. Now if you start cutting limbs off, that’s the only way he (Manny Pacquiao) got a chance.”
Floyd Sr sounds like he is promoting his son, because there are a few problems with his statement. Firstly Pacquiao agreed to take ‘the test’ over a year ago. money is now the issue preventing the fight, allegedly. Secondly, if Pacquiao can only beat a one armed Mayweather Jr, why is a test needed. Floyd Jr said he wants the fight fair, but if it is as easy as his Father says, why not just take an easy pay day and please fans. Thirdly, I distinctly remember Floyd Sr saying he feared for his sons life should he face Manny Pacquiao, as quoted by fightbeat.com. That’s a huge difference in statements. I personally think the fight will be a good one. I certainly can’t see a mismatch on either part. The winner will struggle for the win.
